Hold the configuration constant
Choose the everyday leaf, opening direction and required passage before comparing materials. A narrow active leaf with a large secondary leaf feels different from a balanced pair. Include sidelights where needed, and draw the door arcs against furniture and garden features. An aluminium quote and a uPVC quote should show the same intended route through the opening, even if their permitted frame details differ.
Compare the whole view
Look at the centre meeting section, outer frame, threshold and visible glass area on an elevation drawing. Avoid assuming that every aluminium model has the same slimness or that every uPVC door has the same bulky appearance. Flush and standard designs exist. Physical samples are especially useful where the doors sit beside existing windows: colour, texture and gloss can make a nominally matching shade look different.
Check comfort and cost together
Ask for thermal and weather information for the actual proposed assembly. Frame material alone is not a complete performance specification; glass, seals, configuration and installation all matter. Compare the included lock, handles, threshold detail and applicable warranties. Request the total for survey, delivery, fitting, disposal and making good so a lower supply price is not mistaken for a lower completed-project cost.
What this means for a real brief
A rear room already has white uPVC windows, while a new extension uses dark aluminium. The best French-door choice depends on which elevation it belongs to and the preferred frame appearance. Compare physical samples and matched quotations instead of choosing by material prestige alone.
Turn the comparison into a shortlist
Mark each proposal as confirmed, needs clarification or does not meet the brief. Resolve a failed essential requirement before scoring cosmetic preferences. If both options meet the essentials, compare the extra cost of the details you will notice every day.
- Write down the three essentials for your project: appearance, everyday operation and any required performance.
- Request a dimensioned drawing with opening direction, handles and the exact model.
- Keep glass, finish, survey and fitting scope consistent between quotations.
- Ask for written delivery, warranty and aftercare responsibilities.
- Keep allowances separate from confirmed costs; compare VAT on the same basis.
