The differences at a glance
| Decision | Bifold doors | French doors |
|---|---|---|
| Opening action | Several leaves fold into a stack. | Two hinged leaves open individually or together. |
| Daily access | Check whether the configuration has an appropriate traffic leaf. | Choose the active leaf for the normal route. |
| Space to reserve | Panel sweep and the final stack position. | The swing arcs of both leaves. |
| Closed appearance | Multiple panel divisions across the opening. | A central meeting line, with sidelights if specified. |
Start with an ordinary weekday
How do you get to the bins, garden or washing line when you do not want to open the whole set? On a bifold, confirm the daily-access arrangement and whether it operates from outside as required. With French doors, identify the active leaf and the usable passage through it. Operate the showroom example in the way you expect to use it at home, including closing and locking.
Then plan the fully open position
Draw the panel stack or door arcs on a plan showing furniture, steps, planters and the outdoor dining area. A bifold can connect a broad opening, but the stacked leaves still occupy space. French doors may make a straightforward route, while fixed sidelights can extend the glazed view without extending the opening. Compare actual clear passage dimensions from the proposed drawings, not the overall structural opening width.
Choose the closed view too
Most of the year you will see the doors shut. Compare panel divisions, handle locations and visible frame area at the same scale. A smaller opening may not benefit from additional folding leaves, while a wider entertaining space may make the folding arrangement worthwhile. Ask each supplier to confirm a permitted layout, relevant performance and threshold detail. Keep the installation and finishing scope equivalent when judging price.
What this means for a real brief
A couple wants a wide summer opening but uses the doors several times every day. They shortlist a bifold layout with suitable everyday access and a French-door layout with fixed sidelights. Comparing the daily passage, fully open space and closed elevations makes the trade-off clear.
Turn the comparison into a shortlist
Mark each proposal as confirmed, needs clarification or does not meet the brief. Resolve a failed essential requirement before scoring cosmetic preferences. If both options meet the essentials, compare the extra cost of the details you will notice every day.
- Write down the three essentials for your project: appearance, everyday operation and any required performance.
- Request a dimensioned drawing with opening direction, handles and the exact model.
- Keep glass, finish, survey and fitting scope consistent between quotations.
- Ask for written delivery, warranty and aftercare responsibilities.
- Keep allowances separate from confirmed costs; compare VAT on the same basis.
