Understand your options
| Choice | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Tilt mode | The sash tilts inward at the top in a typical arrangement. |
| Turn mode | The sash opens inward from the side; reserve its full sweep. |
| Hardware | Confirm the operating sequence, handle location and restrictions. |
| Room clearance | Show blinds, curtains, taps, worktops and furniture on the plan. |
Check both modes at the proposed size
A small demonstration window may make inward opening look effortless, but a larger sash occupies more of the room. Request the actual leaf dimensions and draw its movement. Include handle projection and the space needed to stand while operating it, especially behind worktops or furniture.
Coordinate cleaning and ventilation
The inward-turning mode can help access the glass, but a safe cleaning method depends on the installation and user. Tilt mode is an opening for ventilation, not an assurance of security when unattended. Any child-safety, restrictor or escape requirements need to be coordinated with the exact hardware and the project.
Compare with an outward casement
Choose by room function rather than the number of opening modes alone. If an inward sash clashes with a tap or blind, a different division or outward-opening product may be more practical. Compare complete-window figures, glass and installed scope when assessing uPVC against aluminium options.

Apply it to your project
A bedroom window has full-height curtains close to the reveal. Mark their gathered position and the handle before approving the turn mode. A small change in curtain fixing position may solve the conflict; discovering it after decoration is less convenient.
Questions before you choose
Can blinds prevent it opening?
Yes. Check the actual blind and handle clearances in both modes.
Does tilt mode make it safe to leave unlocked?
Do not treat an open window as equivalent to a closed and locked one. Follow the supplier’s operating and safety guidance.
