Understand your options
| Choice | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Casement | Hinged opening lights, often with fixed panes; a starting point for many replacement projects. |
| Flush casement | An opening sash designed to sit flush with the relevant frame face when closed. |
| Sliding sash | Vertically moving sashes for a different appearance and opening method. |
| Tilt and turn | Inward tilt and side-turn modes; needs clear room-side space. |
| Bay and bow | A projecting configuration made from multiple units; the window system is a separate choice. |
| Fully reversible | A specialist operating arrangement to discuss where cleaning access is important. |
Choose room by room
A kitchen window above a tap has different clearance needs from a bedroom window behind curtains. List the room, floor, desired opening and privacy needs before applying one style to the whole house. Mark fixed and opening lights separately: a larger fixed pane changes ventilation and cleaning access as well as the view.
Understand what the quotation describes
uPVC and PVCu are common labels for unplasticised PVC frames. The material name does not specify the profile system, glass, reinforcement, hardware or fabrication. Ask for those details on the quote, together with relevant whole-window performance information. A chamber count or glass-only figure is not a complete window specification.
Plan the complete replacement
Include removal, sills, trims, ventilation provisions and internal and external making good in the scope. A new frame may meet the reveal differently from the existing one, which can affect blinds and decoration. Record final measurement responsibility before approving manufacture; approximate homeowner sizes are suitable for an initial brief only.

Apply it to your project
A whole-house replacement can use flush casements at the front and another suitable opening style at the rear. Coordinate colour and sightlines, but let room use determine operation. Do not copy a bathroom glass specification into a bedroom simply because the units look alike.
Questions before you choose
Does double glazing mean uPVC?
No. Double glazing describes the glass unit; uPVC describes the frame material. Aluminium windows can also use double or triple glazing.
Are coloured frames a different type of window?
Colour and foil finish are specification choices across compatible systems. They do not replace the decision about opening style.
