Understand your options
| Choice | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Sash arrangement | Identify which sashes move and their useful opening positions. |
| Meeting rail | Compare its height and visible width on the actual elevation. |
| Period detailing | Review horns, bars, joints and hardware as a coordinated design. |
| Cleaning features | Confirm whether tilt-in or other access features are included in the exact system. |
Proportions come before decorative extras
Take a straight-on photograph of the existing windows and note the meeting rail, pane proportions and surrounding masonry. A replacement with the wrong divisions can change the elevation even if it has decorative horns and a woodgrain finish. Compare the proposed frame and glass sizes rather than copying decorative details onto a different proportion.
Try the opening sequence
Ask to operate a relevant sample: release the catches, move each sash and return it to the locked position. Discuss reach and effort with the regular users. Any cleaning-release or tilt feature needs a demonstration and instructions; it should not be assumed from the generic sash-window name.
Survey the existing reveal
Older openings can have different internal linings, sill details and hidden junctions from a modern casement. Ask what removal and making good are included and how the frame position will be set. Establish any property restrictions before approving replacement; a heritage appearance is not consent.

Apply it to your project
A terrace has three matching front windows but different internal floor and sill conditions. Keep the exterior proportions coordinated while surveying each opening independently. Treat a repeated visual design as three measured locations, not one size multiplied by three.
Questions before you choose
Is a sliding sash the same as a flush sash?
No. Sliding sash describes vertical movement; flush sash describes the closed relationship between sash and frame, usually on a casement.
Will every sash tilt inward for cleaning?
Do not assume it. Ask which cleaning features are included and how they should be used safely.
