Understand your options

ChoiceWhat to consider
Side-hung openingCheck the swing, handle reach and external obstructions.
Top-hung openingReview the opening position and suitability for the room.
Fixed lightProvides glazing without an opening; consider ventilation elsewhere.
Profile appearanceCompare chamfered or sculptured details and the visible frame around each pane.

Build the elevation around useful openings

Decide which panes need to open before choosing a symmetrical pattern. A fixed centre with opening sides behaves differently from several opening lights. Mark the handle positions and the route for cleaning. The same overall frame size can provide quite different visible glass area depending on the divisions.

Standard does not mean identical

Casement systems vary in frame shape, joints, reinforcement and glazing options. Compare the actual system and fabrication, not a generic white-window photograph. Include restrictors, handles and any required ventilation components on the proposed elevation so their appearance is known before ordering.

Compare the finished installation

For replacements, show the supplier the existing sill, reveals and opening sections. Ask whether trims, removal, disposal and decoration are included. Have room-specific safety, ventilation and escape requirements established for the project; a side-hung label or catalogue size does not prove suitability.

ILLUSTRATIVE SCENARIO

A kitchen has a tap directly in front of the window. An outward-opening casement may avoid the inward sash clash of a tilt-and-turn design, but the exterior swing and safe cleaning method still need checking. The tap, handle and opening light should appear on one sketch.

Questions before you choose

What is a stormproof casement?

It commonly describes an overlapping sash appearance, contrasting with a flush sash. Confirm the section rather than relying only on the marketing label.

Should every pane open?

Only where the room and project requirements call for it. Compare operation, glass area and price for the proposed arrangement.
