Understand your options
| Choice | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Fully glazed | Review privacy, safety glazing and the useful view. |
| Part glazed | Balance daylight with an opaque lower panel or another approved design. |
| Panelled layout | Compare the actual panel construction, design and insulation information. |
| Sidelights | Add fixed glass where needed; do not count it as walk-through width. |
Plan the door in everyday use
Draw the leaf and handle in the open position beside appliances, cupboards, steps and the path outside. State whether it opens in or out, which side is hinged and from which side the drawing is viewed. Ask for the clear passage of the active leaf, not only the outside frame width.
Choose privacy and hardware together
A fully glazed back door can bring useful light into a utility, while privacy glass or a part-panelled layout may better suit an overlooked side path. If a pet flap is needed, choose its model and position before the panel or glass is specified. Confirm compatibility and the effect on door operation with the supplier.
Coordinate the threshold
A convenient everyday entrance still needs appropriate weathering and drainage. Agree internal and external finished levels and the proposed sill detail. For replacements, include removal, trims, floor edges and decoration in the scope so the new door meets the room neatly.

Apply it to your project
A washing machine sits beside a narrow utility opening. Moving the hinge side might stop the handle hitting the appliance but change the route outside. Check the full movement on both sides before approving the door, particularly if the side path has limited width.
Questions before you choose
Can this type be used as a front door?
A suitable specified residential doorset may be proposed for an entrance. Confirm its construction, hardware and relevant performance rather than assuming all back-door specifications suit every use.
Can I add a cat flap later?
Discuss it before manufacture. A prepared panel or replacement glazing unit may be needed; do not assume finished glass can be cut on site.
