Understand your options
| Choice | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Panel arrangement | Identify fixed and moving panels rather than relying only on panel count. |
| Parking side | Decide where the moving panel collects and which side opens. |
| Track and threshold | Check depth, cleaning access and the finished-floor junction. |
| Handles and locks | Specify daily access from inside and outside where needed. |
Know how much of the opening remains glazed
A sliding panel normally parks alongside another panel, leaving part of the aperture occupied. The exact clear passage depends on the system, frame, overlap, handles and stops. Ask for a plan with moving panels and their final positions rather than assuming a percentage from a photograph.
Compare uPVC and aluminium at the same size
Use the same opening and glass brief when looking at frame proportions and price. Available panel sizes, sightlines and configuration limits are system-specific. If very large panes or particularly slim meeting sections are the priority, include the existing aluminium range in the comparison rather than assuming every uPVC system will provide the same result.
Include the floor and delivery route
The track assembly needs a coordinated interface with inside flooring and the outside surface. Show the access route for delivering and handling the units, including narrow gates and turns. For replacements, check what happens to existing floor edges and blinds when the frame dimensions change.

Apply it to your project
A garden path is on the right but the proposed panel opens on the left. Reverse the permitted arrangement or compare another system before ordering. The side that opens can make more difference to daily use than a small change in frame colour.
Questions before you choose
Do all panels slide?
Not necessarily. Identify every fixed and moving panel on the supplier’s drawing.
Can the threshold be flush with the floor?
Only an appropriate system-specific detail should be considered. Coordinate levels, support, weathering and drainage with the supplier and installer.
