Compare everyday access and full opening
One leaf normally does the day-to-day work; opening the pair is a different action. Try both sequences on a sample if possible. A wide overall frame with fixed sidelights can look generous while giving a much narrower daily passage, so request both clear dimensions.
Reserve the swing space
Draw both leaves with furniture in use, curtains hanging and outdoor chairs in place. Check steps, planters and the route past an open door. Discuss the supplier’s hardware and operating guidance for exposed locations rather than assuming the leaves can safely stay open in any weather.
Match the pair to the elevation
Review the centre meeting detail, handles and any glazing bars. Where flush or heritage-styled French doors are proposed, specify the exact system and compare it with adjacent windows. Styling and operation are separate choices; a matching colour does not establish identical frame proportions.
Apply it to your project
A dining room has a modest garden opening and enough space outside for both leaves. French doors may give the familiar active door the household wants. If the patio is crowded, compare a slider in the same opening and ask for its actual passage before deciding.
