The useful answer

Free delivery does not automatically include every activity required to get glazing into its opening. Confirm vehicle access, unloading, handling equipment, receiving checks and storage before a delivery date is agreed.

Walk the route from the road to the opening

Record road restrictions, gates, turns, overhead obstructions, changes in level and the final approach. Share photographs and dimensions where useful. Ask the supplier what arrives assembled, what arrives as separate glass or frame components, and what handling arrangements are required. Large or heavy glazing needs an agreed plan with suitable people and equipment, not an improvised lift on arrival.

Nominate a receiving contact who has the order schedule and can identify the packages. Check quantities, references and visible condition using the supplier’s delivery procedure; photograph and report discrepancies promptly under the agreed terms. Arrange suitable storage using the manufacturer’s instructions if fitting is not immediate. A target building date is not the same as a confirmed delivery booking.

A situation you can apply to your own project

ILLUSTRATIVE SCENARIO

A rear extension is reached through a narrow side passage that will soon be blocked by scaffolding. Discuss delivery sequencing before the scaffold is erected. If access changes, inform the supplier and installer immediately rather than assuming the delivery team can solve it on the day. The handling plan should reflect the site as it will be when the goods arrive.

Work through the specification

Walk the route

Measure the narrowest points from the unloading position to the opening. Note corners, slopes and overhead restrictions, not just the front gate.

Keep phases identifiable

For developments, label each opening by plot and phase. Ask how the goods will be identified and agree whether staged delivery is needed.

Check before the team leaves

Follow the agreed inspection and reporting process. Record visible issues and retain delivery paperwork so any discrepancy can be addressed promptly.

Your checklist before the next conversation

  • Send access photographs
  • Confirm delivered component sizes and handling needs
  • Nominate a receiving contact
