The useful answer
Choose between specified systems, not badges. The useful shortlist is made of actual models that fit your opening, meet your required performance and have a clear route from survey to fabrication, installation and support.
Use pass-or-fail requirements before preferences
Begin with needs that cannot be traded away: a suitable opening arrangement, a required clear passage, appropriate performance and a workable installation detail. Remove or revise any proposal that fails one of these. Then compare preferences such as slimmer framing, handle style, colour and price. This prevents an attractive profile from distracting from a layout that does not work.
A system designer, finished-product manufacturer, retailer and installer can be different businesses. Ask who performs each role for your order. Good components still require appropriate fabrication, glass, hardware and installation. Keep evidence and warranty terms attached to the finished proposal, rather than assuming every door carrying a system name is supplied on identical terms.
A situation you can apply to your own project
A buyer shortlists two brands because of slim sightlines. One proposed configuration cannot provide the daily outside access they need. The first step is to request an alternative layout or model, not to score both on colour and price. Once both meet the essential brief, the visual and cost comparison becomes meaningful.
Compare the practical details
| Decision | What it means for your project |
|---|---|
| Must have | Required operation, clear passage and project performance. |
| Prefer to have | Appearance, frame divisions, handle feel and finish. |
| Evidence | Relevant drawings, data, samples and written inclusions. |
| Responsibility | Named survey, fabrication, installation and support contacts. |

Work through the specification
Get the model in writing
Ask for the manufacturer, system name and version, fabricator where relevant, panel arrangement and dimensions. Two quotes carrying the same brand may still describe different products.
Compare the same configuration
Use the same opening size, panel count, colour, glass and hardware. Compare visible meeting stiles separately from the perimeter frame; a single headline sightline does not describe every part of the door.
Ask what the price includes
Record VAT, survey, delivery, unloading, installation, removal, making good and any equipment separately. Confirm what changes the price and when the quotation expires.
Follow responsibility through the order
Identify who surveys, fabricates, installs and handles a problem after handover. Request written warranty terms, exclusions and service arrangements for the exact proposal.
Your checklist before the next conversation
- List three non-negotiable needs
- Identify exact models
- Separate essentials from preferences
- Try suitable samples
- Confirm the businesses responsible for the completed job
